Canoe guidebooks to the Upper Connecticut River have long included a warning:
“The Old Wyoming Dam at Guildhall is dangerous and should be portaged on the Vermont side.”

Thanks to grants from the Connecticut River Valley Partnership Program and the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife Non-Motorized Access Fund, the VRC was able to establish a formal portage and take-out at Wyoming Dam. Coordinating efforts between the Town of Guildhall, the Vermont Agency of Transportation, and a local landowner, the VRC contracted with the Kingdom Corps (of the Northwoods Stewardship Center) to create an attractive portage trail that includes granite steps, a gravel path, split-rail fencing, and plantings of northern white cedar.

Signage along the route encourages responsible and safe use of the river and better relations between users and landowners. The formal access area now in place serves as a model for other sites along the river that might be established at appropriate locations through similar cooperative efforts. The VRC wishes to thank all who participated and contributed to the successful completion of this important access area.
