Just north of Jeffersonville, beyond the village center, routes 15, 108, and 109 all come together. Look beyond the paved highways, and you’ll see two rivers — the Lamoille and the Brewster — bound by these three roadways. Thanks to local landowners, there’s also 23.3 acres of protected land tucked between these roads and rivers. Situated where the smaller Brewster River meets the mightier Lamoille, these fields and riverside forests are important floodplains. The river corridor easement here ensures that the waterway will be allowed to move and shift over time. It also makes sure the land will never be developed, ensuring that — during the biggest floods — the river can spill over into this low floodplain, allowing the land to absorb the river’s energy and debris. Not only is this good for water quality and wildlife habitat, it’s helps keep roads, businesses, and homes safer from flood damage.
