Cyanotypes on the Headwater Forest of the Barton River

Join VRC’s Community Engagement Coordinator Gabriella Marchesani for a guided hike through the headwater forests of Perry Holbrook Memorial State Park. Discover the hidden beginnings of the Barton River and learn how small streams, native plants, and healthy forests work together to filter water, support wildlife, and sustain the watershed downstream.

After the hike, join artist Benjamin Aleshire for a hands-on cyanotype workshop. Using natural materials gathered along the trail, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind botanical print while connecting ecological discovery with creativity.

A photographer and poet born and raised in Rutland County, Aleshire is the recipient of a Creation Grant from the VT Arts Council and a James Merrill Fellowship from the VT Studio Center. His ongoing project, FOLIAGE, explores portraiture through alternative photographic processes and botanical printmaking. He also serves as Creative Director of Aleshire Gallery in Brandon, VT.

Trail Information

The hike begins with a sustained climb of less than one mile to O’Leary Overlook, offering sweeping views of the surrounding watershed. The route then continues over gentle rolling terrain before descending through the remainder of the trail.

Please note: The initial climb can feel steep, and the trail includes uneven terrain. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
