Climate change means Vermont sees more spring days with 80° temperatures and cold water, and summer days when isolated storms transform a lazy stream into swift current. It might feel like a midsummer day, but frigid or fast water can easily overwhelm even the strongest swimmers.
We’re connecting with everyone we can – from meteorologists and news anchors, to libraries and school nurses – to share key safety messages that can help make sure days on the river end with joy.
You can help spread the word:
-
- Wear your life jacket so you’ll be ready to help others.
- Expect the unexpected. Rivers can change quickly.
Be ready to make new choices.
-
- Designate a Water Watcher – someone who is over 16 years old, actively watching children, and able to respond in an emergency.
- Avoid swimming for 48 hours after a heavy rain.
