We look after more than 100 protected areas across the state, and couldn’t do it without the amazing volunteers who go above and beyond. These site ambassadors roll up their sleeves to do hard work, wrangle friends and neighbors to work alongside them, and are true leaders in their local communities.
Erica Fuller
Thunder Head View, Hancock
A year ago, the trail at Thunder Head View was nameless and overgrown. Not anymore! Erica is out there often with loppers, a weed whacker, trash bags – whatever it takes to give this riverside park the attention it deserves. A true ambassador, she’s taken her love of the site to the community – sharing site info at the local summer music series and leading a town vote for the new name, recruiting volunteers to lend a hand, and even meeting with the select board – building everyone’s pride in this hidden gem.
Adrian Schmit
Journey’s End, Johnson
This Johnson swimming hole has been loved by generations, but it may have just found its greatest champion yet. When Adrian joined us for a volunteer day to build stairs and a boardwalk, their passion shined brilliantly. Since then, Adrian has been our eyes and ears on the ground to let us know how floods impacted the trail, figure out the best places to install new benches, and more. Word spreads fast in small towns, and others took note – Adrian is now on the Conservation Commission and represents Vermont River Conservancy to do even more good work in Johnson.
