Woodbury Mountain Preserve

In 2024, Vermont River Conservancy and Northeast Wilderness Trust conserved Woodbury Mountain permanently protecting 6,257 acres of diverse forest and wetlands in the Lamoille and Winooski watersheds. The conservation easement protects 39 miles of headwater streams, creating space for rivers to regularly flood, slow, and filter pollutants, supporting a rich mosaic of connected habitat for fish and wildlife as well as improved climate resilience.

The Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve falls within the Worcester to Kingdom Wildlife Linkage, a critical corridor identified by the State of Vermont. This corridor is of regional significance, connecting the vast protected areas of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and northern NH with the state-owned Putnam State Forest and Worcester Range Natural Area.

Much of the preserve is rural and extremely difficult to access, with the exception of a few areas. A small parking area has been developed off of County Road in Woodbury between the Preserve and Greenwood Lake. The Preserve is open to public access however, there are no designated trails.

Before Woodbury Mountain was a Wilderness Trust Preserve, most of the land was owned by the Meyer family, which runs the E.B. Hyde timber company. The forest is in excellent condition thanks to their thoughtful multi-generational management.

Directions

From Woodbury Village the property is most easily accessed from where it has a long area of frontage on County Road beside Greenwood Lake. Head north on State Route 14 to a left-hand turn on Greenwood Lake Road (across from Buck Lake Road), which T’s into County Road at the North end of the lake. The preserve begins on the far side of County Road at that T. If you turn left at the T and continue about 0.4 miles on County Road, you will find a gravel parking area which serves as the Preserve’s main access point.
