New Faces at Vermont River Conservancy

October 10, 2026

As the summer winds down, we have welcomed some amazing new members to our team! Learn more about them below.

Saul Costa, Vermont River Conservancy Board of Directors member

Board of Directors Member: Saul Costa

Saul is a lifelong entrepreneur who strives to solve real-world problems with technology. He leads Shock, a nonprofit community technology startup that builds tools that foster in-person connection. He was raised in Vermont and recently moved back after completing a startup career in California. His connection to rivers began at a young age while exploring the Lamoille watershed every summer. He believes that rivers, in addition to being valuable natural resources, link us—literally and spiritually—to one another by transcending human-defined boundaries. He is excited to bring his unique perspective to the Vermont River Conservancy’s board while showing up for communities and their rivers. When not working, he can be found hiking the Green Mountains, spending time with family, and taking in the mountain sunsets.

Addie Hedges, Vermont River Conservancy Communications & Development Coordinator

Communications & Development Coordinator: Addie Hedges

Addie first joined Vermont River Conservancy as an AmeriCorps member in 2023. She then went on to pursue a master’s degree in natural resources with a focus on stream chemistry during the winter at the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School. She conducted a water quality research project in the headwaters of the Connecticut River, where she got to see the seasons change while collecting water samples and troubleshooting equipment. She learned a lot about a small river and its watershed, focusing on what is happening on a small scale. She is now back at Vermont River Conservancy as our Communications & Development Green Roots Fellow. During her year as our fellow, she is excited to zoom back out, connect with supporters, and help to educate people around the state about our work and the rivers all around us.

Matt Shea, Vermont River Conservancy UVM student intern

Wood Turtle Restoration Intern: Matt Shea

Matt is a senior at the University of Vermont, studying to get his undergraduate degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in conservation biology and biodiversity. He is eager aid in Vermont River Conservancy’s mission to protect and restore rivers for people and wildlife using the knowledge and skills he has garnered. Originally from Cape Cod, Matt spent most of his time outside while growing up. These experiences drove his passion and curiosity about natural communities. Through his studies, he has found an interest in wetland ecology, soil science, and strengthen biodiversity and resilience of environments. Matt is the latest intern from the UVM environmental Stewardship Course, and will be diligently working with Stewardship Manager Amanda Garland and friend Kiley Briggs from The Orianne society to collect data and help restore the nesting sites of elusive Wood turtles.
